Quite a beautiful copy with unsigned coloured plates. The top board plate seems to be from the John Beer illustration, minus the park railings, in the 1894 Jarrold's edition. Altemus published numerous versions of Black Beauty, this one is not often found.

Philadelphia: Altemus, no date or other data ["non-series", ca 1915]; blue cloth boards with colored plate of an alert Black Beauty in a pasture peering through the trees at us; the sky is the light orange pink of dawn, but I can't duplicate it; gilt titles and elaborate gilt clover decoration surrounding the plate, pictoral endpaper drawings of hunt scene; many plates (unlisted), 8vo; 250 pp.

CONDITION: Very Good; no names or other marks, cover plate undamaged and gilt bright, cloth on tips worn to white, light margin soil first six pages, beginning to loosen slightly on several openings; plates nice.
