19811 A 19thc child's book collection.

A 19th c child's collection: 9 Sunday School Union books, Jesse Dawson, his books.

Since Jesse Dawson's little library has been so carefully preserved for over a hundred years, we are offering it as a collection only: Wolf Hunt, Story for a Wet Day, Little Footsteps, The Contrast, Sara Hart, The Blind Girl of the Moor, Robert Lee, Fanny the Flower Girl, The Orphan Boy (Michael Daily). A precious piece of Americana, suggesting that some children of the time really did like these books. Please ask for more information.

20305 The Tale of Pigling Bland by Potter.

The Tale of Pigling Bland.

Wonderful little sketches of pigs! Written as BP settled down to farming, She used little pigs as models, and she drew herself as a farmer on p. 22. This book found with another brown paper copy with the G. A. Schwarz, Philadelphia seal. (The toy store owned by a brother of F. A. O. Schwarz.)

19825 The Child's Black Beauty by Sewell

The Child's Black Beauty: rewritten for children.

Really nice colored illustrations. The cover illustration, repeated within, seems to be from John Beer drawing of a Jorrock's 1894 version, a lovely drawing of a horse, widely used in republications. (I think they have changed the tail!). It is difficult to date these Graham booklet series without owner inscriptions, but this date seems to be the consensus for the Mother Goose series; background on the front is the same as the Childland series, on the back different. Only the beautiful condition of this book makes the date suspect. .Note: This book has been sold.

20306 The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin by Potter.

The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin

Beautiful colour, deep and detailed without the harshness of the recoloured version. This book contains the G. A. Schwarz, 1006 Chestnut Street Philadelphia seal. (The toy store owned by a brother of F. A. O. Schwarz.)

21559 VerySmallTaleofTwoVerySmallBears by Grosvenor

The Very Small Tale of Two Very Small Bears (The Story of Two Little Bears on top board).

Sold away from their parents' circus to be trained by a drunken clown, the little bears manage to escape, and, after a long search on their bicycles, encounter Mr. and Mrs. Bruin on the beach. Darling little bears, gentle humour, happy ending. One of only two books by the California teacher and artist, Fredrika or Frederica Grosvenor, somewhat in the style of G. H. Thompson, with finer line and minimal clothing. NOTE: This book has been SOLD.

20312 The Land of Long Ago by Weedon, pub. by Nister.

The Land of Long Ago, a Visit to Fairyland.

Humpty Dumpty escorts two children to the other side of a high brick wall at the bottom of the garden and into fairyland, where nursery rhyme and story characters await. Beautiful scenes can be let down to show Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, The Sleeping Beauty, Puss in Boots, There Was an Old Woman, and Beauty and the Beast. (Hunt p. 337) The pop-up mechanisms are designed so that young children can operate them.

20179 AnimalLandontheAir by Frees, photos.

Animal Land on the Air.

A series of very short intertwined stories, bringing radio, motorcars, and planes into Animal Land, and beginning with A Young Matron, thinking sadly of her husband, Archingback Stripes, reported missing in action in World War I, we presume. Frees has written an interesting preface on animal photography: most suitable are kittens from six to ten weeks of age, as their attention is caught by sight, while a puppy's is distracted by sound. [White 745] NOTE: This book has been sold.
