Here Comes Kristie.

Elmer and Einer saved their pennies for a horse, good old Kristie. Welcome Home! by Ludwig Bemelmans

Welcome Home!

After a poem by Beverley Boggert. An odd plot, the fox, on a sort of drag hunt, stops and washes his paws so that he can escape home, but the subject allows wonderful deep reds: horses streaming through the forest, confused hounds, and a cozy family den. Note: This book has been sold.

Great Horse.

How Tergo, the CroMagnon chief's son followed by his brave little sister went into the forest and learned to ride the wild horses, giving his people a way to defeat their enemies. The language is a little stilted, but the subject is fascinating. Note: This Book Has Been Sold.

Black Horses for the King.

Black Horses for the King.

The court of King Arthur (Artos) from the point of view of a Roman-Celtic boy, Galwyn, who eventually helps Arthur develop a stable of war horses for his knights. To help their hooves adjust to the English climate, he also becomes a skilled farrier. Although this is a departure from science fiction, the author knows her history and her horses, and this book is an absorbing read. (And a good example of how a book's price is more influenced by availability than anything else!) PLEASE NOTE: This book has been sold.

Black Beauty by Sewell, Altemus edition, ca 1915.

Black Beauty, Altemus edition.

Quite a beautiful copy with unsigned coloured plates. The top board plate seems to be from the John Beer illustration, minus the park railings, in the 1894 Jarrold's edition. Altemus published numerous versions of Black Beauty, this one is not often found.
